Karen V. Hill, president & CEO of The Harriet Tubman Home in Auburn, NY, discusses the lesser-known history of freedom icon Harriet Tubman. Through a combination of storytelling and mythbusting, Ms. Hill connects Tubman’s life to key issues that still resonate today.

Harriet Tubman: A Legacy of Hope is in celebration of the U.S. Mint’s 2024 release of the Harriet Tubman Commemorative Coin, which are available for purchase in three denominations from the U.S. Mint and in the Freedom Store at the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center. Surcharges from the sale of each coin will be equally split between the Freedom Center and The Harriet Tubman Home, supporting the mission of the organizations as they continue Tubman’s legacy.

Following the discussion, Ms. Hill will take part in a meet-and-greet with those in attendance from 7:00 - 8:00 p.m., hosted by the Freedom Center Ambassadors. You can also take this opportunity to view a new statue installation celebrating the legacy of Harriet Tubman titled The Beacon of Hope. The 11-foot statue was created by Wofford Sculpture Studio in 2023, depicting the transformation of Tubman from her difficult origins to a symbol of freedom and an American icon. The statue will remain on display at the Freedom Center through April.
