Goals

Our field trip experience goals are to 1.) provide the information needed to facilitate conversations about slavery and injustice in our culture and society, and 2.) inspire and teach how to apply the principles and methods of the Underground Railroad to pursue inclusive freedom and promote social justice for all.

Included Materials

Your experience will be self-guided. We provide educator designed materials to prepare facilitators (teachers and chaperones) and maximize student learning. After booking, you will receive access to the following documents aligned to your chosen field trip experience:

  • Pre-Visit Reading and Vocabulary
  • Facilitator Guides
  • Student Packets
  • Suggested Performance Tasks

Planning Your Field Trip: Things to Know

Group Size

To qualify for school/group pricing, a group is defined as a minimum of 15 paying guests with a reservation at least two weeks in advance.

Chaperones

One chaperone per every ten students is required to book a field trip.

Grants

Limited grant funds are available to schools who meet certain eligibility requirements. Funds are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis.

Availability

Self-guided experiences for student groups last up to 2 hours and are offered Wednesdays through Sundays. We will contact you for alternate options if your requested dates, times or programs are already fully booked. All groups are required to make a reservation.

Self-Guided Tours

The Freedom Center does not offer guided tours for field trips.

Lunch

Due to capacity restraints, the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center is not able to provide accommodations inside the building for groups to eat lunches.

What is the grade/age range of the students who will attend?
*A minimum of (1) chaperone per (10) students is required. *Include all adults: teachers, parent chaperones, bus drivers, etc.
Open Wednesdays - Sundays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
If you select yes, we will send you a grant application in a follow up email.
