September is International Underground Railroad month. In addition to free admission for the day, we are proud to host an exciting lineup of programs fitting for this month's theme as well as the theme in our temporary exhibit, Witness to the Journey: Matt Herron and the Deep South, 1965.
Underground Railroad Site tabling and presentations
We are proud to welcome Gammon House, the John Rankin House Historic Site, John Parker House, Preble County District Library, Harriet Beecher Stowe House and more to the Freedom Center for tabling and rotating presentations with Q&A sessions. All day, Third Floor.
Hoxworth Blood Drive
Hoxworth returns to the Freedom Center for a fall blood donation drive. All donors will receive a Hoxworth flannel shirt, perfect for the fall season!
The donor bus will be parked on Freedom Way in front of the Freedom Center and accepting donations from 10:00 a.m.-12:15 p.m. and 1:30-3:45 p.m.
Voter Registration
The Urban League of Greater Southwestern Ohio will host voter registration from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in our First Floor Lobby. Learn more about the importance of voting in our new temporary exhibit, Witness to the Journey, Matt Herron and the Deep South, 1965.
Escape 28 film screening
Watch a new film based on one of the largest documented escapes in American history. Film screening (rated PG-13) starts at 12:00 p.m. in the Harriet Tubman Theater, followed by a vocal performance and moderated discussion about the film's story and production at 1:30.
Appalachian Freedom Heritage Tour discussion
Join historians Cicero Fain III and Andrew Feight in the Harriet Tubman Theater at 3:00 p.m. for a conversation about how free Black communities in Ohio River towns and in rural settlements provided critical networks of refuge and assistance to freedom seekers. Their research highlights the importance of Black Baptist and AME churches, Black barbers and the interracial cooperation to sustain the region’s "underground" resistance to slavery.
