CINCINNATI, OH (March 2, 2018) – After hosting the John and Francie Pepper Freedom Lecture Series with Dr. Nikki M. Taylor last night, the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center continues programming throughout March in honor of Women’s History Month. Programs include the Speak & Sign Series with Olympic Gold Medalist, Mary Wineberg on Saturday, March 10 at 10:00 a.m., Our Foremothers on Thursday, March 15 at 6:00 p.m., and Gallery Talk: Women’s Rights on Saturday, March 24 at 1:30 p.m. RSVPs are requested for the Speak & Sign Series and Our Foremothers. The Gallery Talk is free with general admission.
The Speak & Sign Series features Mary Wineberg who is a 2008 Olympic Gold Medalist and a 2007 World Championship Gold Medalist in the 4x400 meter relay in track and field. Wineberg will speak about how she overcame odds and challenges to grace the top step of the Olympic Podium. Following the conversation, guests will have the opportunity to purchase Wineberg’s autobiography, Unwavering Perseverance from the Smith and Hannon Bookstore at the museum and get it signed. Our Foremothers is the museum’s signature Women’s History Month program and illuminates lesser known women in various significant roles in history. In previous years, the museum has recognized Harriet Ann Jacobs, Septima Poinsette Clark, Josephine Baker and others. This year 11 women of history who have contributed to the fight for freedom will be highlighted including Caroline Still Wiley Anderson, Marita Odette Bonner Occomy, Willa Beatrice Brown, Henrietta Vinton Davis and more. Morgan Owens will be the emcee of the program. Owens is the creator of Curvy Cardio and has partnered with Chef Bambina and the Cincinnati Herald to launch the workshop “Babes in Bizness” which is designed to be an innovative workshop series which includes a panel of successful entrepreneurs to coach guests in developing their own network within the community. “We are thrilled to offer these exceptional programs to celebrate women whose stories are often forgotten and untold,” says Tara Riley, Interim Director of Museum Experiences at the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center. “By sharing insight on the contributions and triumphs of these lesser known freedom fighters, guests will have a greater understanding on the challenges women continue to face today.”
Corine Fairbanks is the featured speaker in the March gallery talk and will discuss struggles women encounter in getting the basic social and civil liberties. Fairbanks is a writer, educator and activist beginning her career with the American Indian Movement in 1986. Fairbanks is a current board member of the American Civil Liberties Union affiliate Santa Barbara Chapter.
