for a dialog on progressive learning, September 6
CINCINNATI, OH (August 17, 2018) –The National Underground Railroad Freedom Center will host Education is Freedom, Freedom is Change on Thursday, September 6, 2018 from 5 - 8:00 p.m. with featured speaker, Erin Gruwell. This program is free and open to the public. RSVPs are requested.

Education is Freedom, Freedom is Change is a program that allow educators, students, parents and community leaders to come together to engage in topics pertaining to the field of education for the new school year. Erin Gruwell is a teacher, author, and the founder of the Freedom Writers Foundation. By fostering an educational philosophy that values and promotes diversity, she transformed her students’ lives and encourages them to re-think rigid beliefs about themselves and others, reconsider daily decisions, and ultimately re-chart their futures.

“With the start of the new academic year, we are thrilled to welcome Ms. Gruwell along with educators and parents in the community to build stronger relationships for the benefit of our youth,” says Tara Riley, Special Projects Officer at the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center. “By sharing her perspective, our guests will be further inspired to engage and interact with the learning community.”

Gruwell and her students captured their collective journey in The Freedom Writers Diary. She founded the Freedom Writers Foundation where she currently teaches educators around the world how to implement her innovative lesson plans into their own classrooms. Gruwell created the Freedom Writers Methodology, a progressive teaching philosophy and curricula designed to achieve excellence from all students.
