Critical Race Theory can transform our understanding of the past. It provides a factual historic narrative where people of color are active agents – not merely objects or bystanders – resisting and grappling with colonialism and enslavement in America.

Rodney Coates, Ph.D., professor of Global and Intercultural Studies at Miami University, debunks the misrepresentation of Critical Race Theory that has been perpetuated by white nationalists and extremists. Dr. Coates demonstrates the power and usefulness of Critical Race Theory in examining our storied past, and better understanding our present. Using excerpts from his recent book Critical Race Theory and the Search for Truth, Dr. Coates presents Critical Race Theory as a critical counternarrative to racialized stories that silence and diminish people of color and perpetuate what educator W.E.B. Du Bois called “history as propaganda.”
