Educator Open House: Social Justice in Social Studies

Thursday, October 1, 2020 at 6:00 p.m.

The National Underground Railroad Freedom Center is excited to present our annual Educator Open House. We welcome all educators, parents, and community leaders to join us. Attendees will have the opportunity to:

  • virtually tour the museum’s new website
  • hear about available Online Learning Resources
  • learn about the museum’s youth programs and other educational initiatives

Today, people are having more critical conversations about social justice and racial equity. When it comes to matters of social justice and racial equity, the Underground Railroad is the essential foundational network for the modern-day movements. From the Black Lives Matter movement to the Niagara Movement of the 20th century, the Underground Railroad serves as the precursor to these monumental movements.

“We truthfully live in the present the past has built… our history remains relevant”

- Christopher Miller, Senior Director of Education and Community Engagement

The Educator Open House will conclude with a moderated discussion with Dr. David Childs and Dr. Lauren Colley regarding a greater emphasis on social justice within the educational discipline of social studies. Dr. Childs is an Associate Professor of Social Studies and History in the Department of Teacher Education at Northern Kentucky University. Dr. Colley is an Assistant Professor of Social Studies Education in the School of Education at the University of Cincinnati.
