Synopsis by Paul Bergman:
Welcoming Echoes: John Lewis and His Bridge to Truth follows John Lewis from his youthful days to his gradual justice-awakening and full embrace of the "Beloved Community." We gain a sense of who and what shaped him as a child and why his star shined so brightly. Although he suffered the indignity of many arrests due to peaceful but “inconvenient” demonstrations, his brilliance never dimmed. The words of Lewis, the power of his commitment and the poignancy of painful reversals join in a tapestry of a dynamic decade. All this before proceeding to the shadows, then the glory of his later years.
The 1960s saw boldness in the struggle for civil rights. Heroism triumphing over harm. Lewis, in his leadership and dedication, was frequently the voice that called out for courage and sustained action. This play gives one a sense of that power—a determined response many of us are looking for today.

In particular, he sees the ongoing struggle for human rights ringing its bell with a clarion call to awareness. Paul believes stories from the past can instruct us, provide a sense of the ‘Why?” and inspire us to act.
