FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CINCINNATI, OH (September 14, 2017) – The National Underground Railroad Freedom Center will host the John & Francie Pepper Freedom Lecture Series featuring Ronald C. White on Wednesday, October 4 at 6:00 p.m. The John & Francie Pepper Freedom Lecture Series connects the public with award-winning authors, historians and thought-leaders, discussing themes on history, race, culture and modern abolition. The lecture is free and open to the public. RSVP’s are requested. Cincy Magazine is the print media sponsor for the 2017 – 2018 series.

Born in Minneapolis, Minnesota Ronald C. White is an award-winning author, historian and lecturer based in La Canada, California. White will discuss The New York Times bestseller, American Ulysses: A Life of Ulysses S. Grant. In American Ulysses White details how Grant was not only a brilliant general but also a passionate defender of equal rights in post-Civil War America. After winning the election in 1868, Grant used the power of the federal government to battle the Ku Klux Klan. He was also the first president to state that the government’s policy toward American Indians was immoral, and the first ex-president to embark on a world tour, and he cemented his reputation for courage by racing against death to complete his Personal Memoirs. White shows Grant to be a generous, curious, introspective man and leader—a willing delegator with a natural gift for managing the rampaging egos of his fellow officers.

“We are thrilled to have White share the story of President Grant as he represents one of the most celebrated American heroes after leading the Union Army to victory,” says Christopher Miller, Manager of Program Initiatives at the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center. “By revealing the challenges Grant overcame in battle and his presidency, this lecture will help to inspire others to take action in the ongoing fight for freedom.”

White is also the author of three books on Abraham Lincoln, attended Northwestern University and is a graduate of UCLA and Princeton Theological Seminary, earning a Ph.D. in Religion and History from Princeton University. He has taught at UCLA, Princeton Theological Seminary, Whitworth University, Colorado College, Rider University, and San Francisco Theological Seminary. He is a Fellow at the Huntington Library in San Marino, California, and a Senior Fellow of the Trinity Forum in Washington D.C.

The John & Francie Pepper Freedom Lecture Series with Ronald C. White at the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center is Wednesday, October 4 with a public reception at 6:00 p.m. followed by the lecture. Cincy Magazine is the print media sponsor for the 2017-2018 series. The lecture is free open to the public. RSVPs are requested. For more information and to RSVP visit freedomcenter.org.
