Abolitionist newspapers played a vital role in the crusade to end slavery in the United States. The articles carried in
these publications educated readers about the evils of the institution of slavery and helped to turn public opinion in
northern states against it. At the same time, northern newspapers advertised “run away” slaves and brokered slavery. The printing press also allowed the Black press to flourish.
