Galveston & John Rufus Gibson: A Story About Freedom & Opportunity

Galveston, Texas is known as the setting for the historic events at the heart of the Juneteenth holiday. But what came next for the Black community in Galveston? Guest Sam Collins III will share the story of John Rufus Gibson, a pioneering educator from Ohio that made a lasting mark on Galveston and the world. Mr. Collins is co-chair of the Juneteenth Legacy Project Committee and currently serves as advisor to the National Trust for Historic Preservation representing Texas. He is active in the national campaign to #TellTheFullStory which aims to expand the narrative in American history by highlighting lesser known Black leaders.
