Welcome to the Freedom Center’s New Genealogy Notebook!

Our genealogy notebook is designed for YOU. Your questions and comments will drive our discussions.

The Family Search Center relies on volunteers. These volunteers serve visitors from all across the United States helping them to begin their genealogical journey. However, since most visitors are with us only a short time we propose continuing this relationship and starting others through our blog.  We’ll start the discussion with our comments and insights. You can add your own insights and questions. Also, please post your genealogy research questions here so that we may give you some paths to follow so you can more easily find your answers.

Nice Idea! How to distinguish between direct and indirect Data?

19332Blue -

I need some organizational help. Any suggestions? I have so many records and bits of information.

Margie Schwieterman -

Martha, I am not sure of your meaning. Are you referring to Primary and Secondar sources? Also, where are you trying to distinguish them? In your organizational charts?

Margie Schwieterman -

Blue, one of the best ways that I know is to start putting your information on PAF which is free on Family Search.org. As you enter the information into PAF, you might start a file for each family and put your paper bits into the file.

Martha Rapp -

Yes primary and secondary sources. I get those confused. I need to have a better understanding period. I am retro putting sources to my genealogy.

Victor Allison -

Searching for ancestral information for Edward F. Allison, born 1857 in Metamora, Indiana and for George G. Allison, born January 1, 1862 in Metamora, Indiana.

Margie Schwieterman -

When you refer to ancestral information, I take it that your are desirous of going backward with Edward and George. Is that correct?

Margie Schwieterman -

Victor, I found an Edward and a George Allison on the 1870 cenus living with a brother Monroe and parents Lafayette and Prudence. Is this your family?

Margie Schwieterman -

Martha, are you making any progress?

Searching for: John Wesley Moore, freed as a child,(said to have been “passing”, and half brother to John Trotwood Moore-author), John worked for the Mary B Greene lines, died in Riverboat accident. Wife, Nora Ellen Moore, later remarried to man with last name Ashnire, may be misspelled. John and Nora had one daughter, Margie Alice Moore, born Oct. 1911, died in 1977. John and Nora married in Ky.,church and records burned. Research says the only fatality on the Greene Lines was in 1916. I was hoping to find evidence that my Great-Grandfather existed, and maybe find a photo to put next to Nora’s and Margie’s, in the albumn. This is my first time doing research on line, what’s next? I look like the female version of John Trotwood Moore, only a little darker. Margie (my Grandmother) looks like Uncle Wash, only a little lighter. I have solved the “family mystery” in the writings of J. T. Moore,as my Grandma said to do, now I am in need of tangible truth, and more help. Thank You VERY much for even considering reading this. Please e-mail in return.Thank You

looking for hardin denham,b1760,in virginia.

Margie Schwieterman -

Harold, you have a challenge ahead of you. If you can give me more information we can help you. Do you know any more about his family? Did he marry? Have children? Also, the Virginia census of 1790 and 1800 are not available. However, the Commonwealth has wonderful historical records such as military records, church warden records, tax records. Do you know what county Hardin was from? If you will give me a bit more information, I will be able to narrow your search.

He had one brother who came to the USA in 1906 through Ellis Island named Conrad Brethauer and settled in Winnipeg Manitoba Canada. I can’t seem to get through the tangle to see if there is family left in Russia.
They were Russian/German immigrants. Jakobs ship the Barbarossa was confiscated after they arrived because of the war and it was a German ship. It was its last voyage, and renamed the Mercury.

Paula Roen Kester -

I have been trying to find out any information I can about my birth father. All I know is that his name is George Knowlton and he may have been from Albuquerque, New Mexico. My uncle said he knew him when he was a member of Company K stationed at Fort Snelling in Minneapolis, Mn during WWII. (I have no proof of this though.) He and my mother were involved in 1947 when I was born, but they never married. I believe he married another woman and continued to live in Minneapolis. My mother said she continued to run into him periodically over the years. I have also been told he worked for White Castle.
I would appreciate any information about him. I would like to know who he was. If it helps, my mother,s name was Pearl.
Thank You.
