Freedom Center and Cincinnati Symphony Celebrate African American Composers

Posted on September 18th, 2008 by Paul Bernish

The Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra (CSO) and the Freedom Center are teaming up to present an evening of celebration of the countless musical contributions of African American composers.

The event, on October 9th at 7 p.m., is entitled “Classical Roots, Jazz & Cocktails,” and features a live performance by the acclaimed Ritz Chamber Players, an African American chamber ensemble of internationally recognized soloists based in Jacksonville, Florida. They will perform a blend of classical and jazz musical genres featuring contemporary black composers.  Immediately following the performance (in the Harriett Tubman Theater), a “Meet the Artists” reception is planned in the Freedom Center’s Grand Hall for patrons featuring jazz music and cocktails.

Admission is $15, and tickets can be reserved by calling 513.381.3300.

The Ritz Chamber Players will be in Cincinnati as part of the CSO’s Classical Roots program, which features a series of concerts, performances and related activities intended to promote cultural diversity and community engagement.

I am ecstatic to see this event happen! I can’t wait to see it happen in a larger venue to an enthusiastic audience who simply wants to hear beautiful music by composers who happen to be African-American.
