Community Forum: The Anniversary of Katrina - August 5th at 6 PM

Posted on July 23rd, 2008 by Chris McMahon

It’s been almost three years since coastal communities in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama were harshly impacted by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Today there is still work to be done to restore these areas. Many Americans have not forgotten that our fellow citizens are still in need of help. What are you doing for the cause?

Start by joining the discussion by joining us on August 5th in the Harriet Tubman Theater at the Freedom Center. This event is free to the public and will begin at 6 PM.

Chris McMahon -

I read an article yesterday about the maze of paper work residence are required to fill out in order to receive the Government grants provided under the Road Home program.

It really is a shame how badly managed the recovery has been.

I’m concerned that we as a nation are facing a crisis of unimaginable proportions because of Provisional Voting. Anytime a change of address/precinct/name etc. occurrs we are all at risk. Foreclosures and acts of nature when combined with the Help America Vote Act which gave us Provisional Voting will savage us. Go to FEMA’s website and click on declared disasters. They have data available by county for the nation. I began alerting people in February 2008 about the foreclosures and early summer 2008 about FEMA. Spread the word about the Secretary of State’s “Bring ID” brochure when you vote. It’s a pdf composed of 2 pages. She details an empowering list of ALL the acceptable forms of ID that will prevent the unnecessary casting of Provisional Ballots. ID laws vary wildly across the country.
