News: British Samaritan Flies In Health Care to Rural Tennessee

BBC News has a story about a British Good Samaritan named Stan Brock, who recently flew in much needed dental and health care supplies — not to some impoverished country in the developing world, but to Tennessee!

The account will cause you to scratch your head in amazement. Piloting a World War II DC-3 that helped land American troops in France on D-Day, Brock delivered dental chairs and other medical equipment to rural people who struggle to survive without health insurance to cover their basic health care needs.

Hard to imagine, isn’t it, that in the wealthiest nation on earth, some of its citizens have to rely on the charity of foreign nationals to get their teeth pulled, their eyes checked, or that lump in their chest X-rayed. The economic disparity in the U.S. between the haves and have-nots — the two worlds of wealth and poverty — can sap the human spirit and limit a person’s horizons. It’s an issue that cries out for informed, bold leadership in this year’s Presidential campaign

At the Freedom Center, we talk about the struggle through history of people to achieve freedom. Articles like this one are a stark reminder that true freedom also means having the ability to live a life of dignity and purpose, where access to health care is widely available and individuals don’t have to wait for an angel of mercy to descend from the sky.

Crime Replaces Race as Cincinnati’s Top Community Concern

A survey of public attitudes in the eight-county Cincinnati region reveals that worries about crime and safety have replaced race issues. These concerns cut across all racial and ethnic lines, the report also shows.

The survey, conducted by BRIDGES For A Just Community, a local human relations organization, also indicates that despite growing diversity in the region, separation by race and ethnicity is still widely prevalent. Interaction among people of varying backgrounds is most often linked to the workplace and educational or professional status.

More than 1,600 respondents were surveyed by phone last fall by the University of Cincinnati’s Institute for Policy Research.

In the previous survey, conducted in 2003, more than one in five respondents mentioned racial issues as their top concern, but in the most recent survey, only 5% cited race as a top concern. Crime and safety and the state of the economy were far more pressing concerns, the BRIDGES report notes.

The full report is available on the Bridges website .

May 22nd: “Bodies — The Exhibition” Forum @ 6p.m.

The National Underground Railroad Freedom Center will host a community forum, “A Faith & Culture Dialogue on BODIES…The Exhibition,” on Thursday, May 22, 2008 at 6 p.m. in the Center’s Harriet Tubman Theater. Part two of the discussion will be held on Thursday, May 29 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Cincinnati Museum Center.

The Forum will discuss issues that have arisen about the source of the bodies used in the blockbuster exhibit, “BODIES…The Exhibition,” currently on display at the Cincinnati Museum Center.

During the May 22 community forum, area faith leaders including Rabbi Gary Walter, Temple Sholom; Dr. Wenyi Wang, Falun Gong Faith and Fr. Robert Jack, will explore the rights and freedoms of the deceased and the issue of human rights. On May 29, Mr. James Jackson, Cincinnati Enquirer and Ms. Suzanne Costandi will discuss various community opinions on this issue.

The forums are designed to provide a “safe-house” environment for the public to discuss issues of human rights and science education. Small groups within the audiences will have the opportunity to dialogue with each other focusing on the question, “In what ways can I make a difference on the issue of exhibiting deceased human bodies, where the bodies are utilized with or without consent of the individual?”

Mr. Carl Westmoreland, Freedom Center Senior Advisor and Freedom Radio host, will moderate the discussions. Sponsors of the forums are the University of Cincinnati Just Community, Cincinnati MuseumCenter, Faith Community Alliance, Archdiocese of Cincinnati Catholic Social Action Office, BRIDGES for a Just Community, Cincinnati Human Relations Commission, Japanese American Citizens League (Cincinnati Chapter) and the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center.

If you can’t attend, you can listen to a live streaming broadcast starting at 6 p.m by clicking here. The events are free and open to the public. Parking is available for $5. For more information, please call 513.333.7518.

Uncovering a “Pandora’s Box” of Web-based Prostitution

According to a report in the Sacramento Bee, teenage prostitution, in which meetings are arranged via Internet solicitations, is increasing rapidly. The girls being "recovered" from life as a prostitute — some of them as young as 14 — are moved from city to city, motel to motel by their controllers ("pimps") who solicit business on portable laptops with Internet access. Sacramento detectives have found victims transported to the California capital from Minnesota, Montana, Texas and Wisconsin.

In 2003, the FBI reported that about 1,400 juveniles were arrested nationally for prostitution, but law enforcement officials believe the number is much higher today — and growing.

The Sacramento Bee article is harrowing reading, and here’s the link .

FBI Warns of Increase in Human Trafficking in U.S.

Law enforcement officials increasingly are being trained to identify crime situations in which human trafficking victims may be involved. Last week the Federal Bureau of Investigation conducted a day-long training seminar for local law enforcement in suburban Dayton, Ohio. Attendees were told that although human trafficking is difficult to detect, it appears to be spreading into cities and towns across America — including local neighborhoods in Midwestern cities like Cincinnati, Columbus and Dayton.
